Topics

01 — My Academic Journey

I am a first-generation college student who graduated from a Title 1 (high-poverty) high school. My journey to becoming the first doctor in my maternal and paternal family was filled with several obstacles that I still deal with today. I love to discuss what I think were barriers and facilitators to my success while motivating others to pursue their goals despite their circumstances.

02 — Prioritizing Your Wellness

I have always been interested in wellness and health promotion. It is one of the reasons I started this career journey. As a healthcare professional, an academic, and someone who was raised in a health disparate area, I know it can be extremely challenging to prioritize your wellness for several reasons. I love to discuss how we can be more intentional about prioritizing wellness and offer tips and resources to facilitate and automate our wellness plans. I also like to create a safe space for candid discussions about the struggles we face to maintain our well-being and foster community with others who have similar wellness goals or thoughts.

03 — Sleep Health & Your Health

Evidence suggests that sleep has an impact on all of our body’s systems. So, our wellness, along with our behaviors, performance, and more, depends on our sleep health. Therefore, it is essential to have good sleep health. I love discussing how we can establish practical and individualized routines that not only improve the amount of time we sleep but our satisfaction with our sleep among other sleep health parameters.

04 — Research

Risk factors for several leading causes of death begin in childhood, and one of those risk factors is poor sleep health. Unfortunately, sleep health in children continues to decrease, and sleep deprivation, not getting enough sleep, is even considered a global epidemic. My research focuses on how we can individualize our approaches to improving pediatric sleep health while considering the challenges of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. My research uses a health equity lens, and I personally have a passion for using community-engaged approaches to determine what health equity outcomes communities, especially the youth, want to improve. My research intersects these beliefs and incorporates my holistic view as a nurse and my personal experiences being from a disadvantaged background.

05 — Moderator/Panelist

I enjoy and have experience facilitating conversations on various research and healthcare-related topics, examples include webinars focused on minority health research, sleep science, behavioral science, and nursing science. As a moderator, I have a goal of creating a safe space for the presenters and attendees while capturing different viewpoints and voices. As a panelist, I have contributed to discussions about work-life harmony, navigating academia, and wellness. As a panelist, I can provide the lens of a pediatric researcher, a person from a disadvantaged background, a Black woman in academia, and a nurse scientist.
